Advertising Image wins Gold Award
Tuesday, 21 December 2010 00:00

c25 resized 300x300As a freelance commercial photographer, most of my business is generated by word-of-mouth referrals, networking and knocking on doors.  Other photographers try submitting their work into competitions and assessment panels - looking for that "award-winning photographer" title to help sell themselves to potential clients.

So, I recently thought I'd give this approach a try.  For some time, I have been a member of an international body of photographers known collectively as "The Societies."  This week, they notified me that my bottled water image had received a Gold Award in the Commercial category of their monthly competition.  The full sized version can be seen within my Gallery here.

I won't be giving up knocking on doors, but this award has inspired me to look at more formal and indirect ways of marketing my business in 2011.

The Scotsman Property of the Week
Thursday, 04 November 2010 00:00

Learmonth_GdnsMost of my estate agency photographs go no further than the selling agent's website, the Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre and the brochures handed out to potential buyers.  One recent commission was a bit different though...

The property, a top floor Edwardian flat, had been extensively renovated by the present owners. Even before I walked through the door, I knew it would give opportunities for some good shots, with the sunny outlook and mature wooded gardens to the front.

It was only after the shoot was done that I became aware of an additional use for my pictures  Every Thursday, the Scotsman newspaper runs a property supplement and it was great to see five of my photos supporting todays "Property of the Week" article, spread over two pages anchor

A useful one to stick in the portfolio...

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
